Comet Lulin was discovered by a young meteorology student at China’s Sun Yat-sen University. He spotted it as he was looking at a black-and-white star field photograph taken by a Taiwanese astronomer Chi Sheng Lin on “sky patrol” at the Lulin Observatory. So the comet was named after the observatory where the photo was taken.
