Where did Birthstones originate?
Birthstones originated from a high priest named Cohen Gadol (Aaron). Cohen had a breastplate with twelve stones (birthstones) on it, a stone for each of the tribes of Israel. Each tribe was assigned a zodiac according to the Egyptian calender. After a period of time, when the Julian Calender system was developed, the birthstones listed for the zodiac month were transposed to the corresponding calender months. The Modern Birthstone list is compiled by the Jewelers Of America and was officially adopted in 1912. The Traditional Birthstone list contains older birthstones and is sometimes combined with the modern birthstone list. These stones reflect societal birthstone traditions, heralding back to the 15th century. (Many jewelers have differing lists of traditional birthstones.)
