MOSCOW — A Russian heavy-lift military cargo plane crashed on takeoff Sunday in Siberia, killing all 11 crew members on board, officials said. The crash was the second accident in less than a month involving an Il-76 , the mainstay of the Soviet and Russian air force since the 1970s. These and a string of other accidents have raised concerns about the condition of Russia’s aging fleet of Soviet-built aircraft. The cause of Sunday’s crash was not yet known. The four-engine plane had just taken off from Mirny in the Sakha Republic when it banked to the right and was unable to gain altitude, said Vasily Panchenkov, a spokesman for the Interior Troops, which were flying the aircraft. Russian Military Plane Crashes, 11 Dead By VOA News 01 November 2009 Russian authorities say a heavy-lift military cargo plane has crashed on takeoff in eastern Siberia, killing all 11 people on board. Investigators say the huge four-engine Ilyushin IL-76 had just taken off Sunday from Mirny, in the Yakutia region, when it rolled at an altitude of about 20 meters, crashed, and burst into flames. The plane, bound for the Siberian city of Irkutsk, went down in an open field about two kilometers from the runway. There were no reports of injuries on the ground. Russia’s Itar-Tass news agency said the weather was clear at the time of take-off and that flight recorders have been recovered.
