There are not many alternatives to metal flatware, but there are a few. Usually you can get flatware that is plastic or ceramic as an alternative, and wooden forks and spoons may also be found. For your higher end knives, I recommend ceramic. Ceramic can be costly, but it is worth the trade-off to get a high quality knife that is just as good as a steel carving and cutting knife. You can see some cermic knives at this website. Unfortunatley, most plastic flatware is aimed at being disposable. This means that you typically won’t find any good quality (or good looking) flatware in plastic. There are some sets out there that are a bit higher end (used for weddings and parties) that look good and would probably survive many washings and trips through the dishwasher. You could also use cheap disposable plastic flatware from your local grocery store
