Where can we get more information about eBay negative feedback libel?
Here’s a cautionary tale for those online auction shoppers prone to venting their disgruntled spleens at eBay sellers after receiving a substandard purchase or experiencing a particularly unsavoury transaction. Specifically, 42-year-old Chris Read from Herne Bay in Kent is facing the possibility of being dragged through the courts after an eBay seller he issued with negative feedback decided to react by launching a libel lawsuit. Trouble started brewing for Mr. Read when he attempted to buy a Samsung F700 mobile phone from 26-year-old Suffolk businessman and eBay seller Joel Jones, only to find the product anything but how it was described on the auction site. “I was told the phone was in good condition, but there were scratches all over it, a big chip out of the side and it was a different phone [to the one shown on the seller’s eBay page],” explained Mr. Read in a Telegraph report. After returning the phone and requesting a full refund, an unhappy Mr. Read duly used eBay’s seller fee
How many times have you bought something on eBay and the sale didn’t go quite according to plan? What did you do, just bite your lip and say nothing or make use of that eBay tool called the feedback system to leave a negative for the seller so that other potential buyers would be aware of the problems you encountered? For the first few years I would imagine the majority of people would have left the negative feedback. Then, it seems to me, more and more people stopped doing this because it resulted in tit-for-tat negative feedback being posted about them for no good reason.
