Where can strength and casualty figures for the military services be obtained?
The most easily accessible and complete listing appears to be that of the U.S. Army Center of Military History on its Web site at http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/faq/FAQ-C&C.htm. The site offers detailed comparisons of strength, manners of death, deaths per 100,000 strength – by military service and sex. These figures include the 1979-1997 period. Similar figures are available for the Vietnam conflict. There are also tables of the number of Army personnel who served during each major war and casualties incurred and the number of U.S. Army casualties in recent operations up to and including operations in Haiti, 1994-1996. Some of the tables require download of the free Adobe Acrobat Reader Version 3.01 or higher. The program can be loaded on-line at http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/readstep.html or via Acrobat Reader CD-ROM.
