Where can stone tiles be installed?
A. For a detailed technical report refer to BS5385 Wall and Floor tiling. The tiles must be laid on a suitable substrate, the surface must be flat, dry, clean free of dust or grease. Below are brief notes on the likely substrates encountered: Sand and cement screeds A dry level screed is ideal for laying natural stone tiles. Newly laid screeds must be fully cured before stone is installed. The generally recommended drying time is 20-30mm per week, possibly longer with bad weather conditions. Timber suspended floors The floor must not flex under the load of the tiles. To strengthen the floor fix 18mm plywood over the floor in a staggered pattern and screw down at 140mm centres. A flexible adhesive and grout must be used when fixing to timber floors. Existing tile floors Loose tiles should be removed and the remainder thoroughly cleaned and degreased.
