Where can I obtain the required education in human lactation and breastfeeding?
Lactation specific education is offered by a number of independent educators and academic institutions. Consult your local college or university and explore opportunities offered by independent course providers. Some of these providers, as well as colleges and university, offer distance learning opportunities. A good resource for information on lactation education programs is the International Lactation Consultant Association. Candidates are encouraged to choose a course recognized by the Approval and Accreditation Review Committee (AARC) on Education in Human Lactation and Breastfeeding. AARC will eventually offer accreditation for academic programs as well.
