Where Can I Look Up UK Marriage Certificates / Birth Certificates Online For Free Without Giving My Card No?
It’s important to understand the difference between actual birth RECORDS and what you can view online, as these are two very different things. All the various sites like Ancestry offer is access to the BMD INDEXES, which give you just enough information to go to the General Register Office (gro.gov.uk) and pay your £7 to order a proper copy of a birth/marriage or death certificate with all the details on. You cannot view English certificates online, and even those that you can view have to be more than 100years old usually and have to be paid for. The word free doesn’t come into it. And that £80 is merely the beginning. freebmd.org.uk has the English and Welsh BMD indexes up to a point (as far as about 1920) so you could try there first and then spend the £7 for a certificate. If you do join ancestry (and most google adverts direct you to them via various means) then make sure you do cancel before the trial period is up.
