The best place to get cheap rare earth magnets is in electronics and toys. Every hard drive will have a rare earth magnet in it, so if you can find old, broken hard drives, it’s easy to harvest the magnets from them. Speakers, too often have rare earth magnets in them (although it’s mostly more modern speakers, so don’t bother looking for them in old, garage sale speakers). Many toys contain rare earth magnets, although because they can be dangerous if swallowed, many have been taken off the shelf in recent years. One place you’ll nearly always find rare earth magnets is on one of those electric-powered miniature racecar tracks.
