Shelters, most of which are schools, are spread out in various locations throughout the county. Buildings are designated as shelters by the American Red Cross and are designated based on their temporary housing capacity (such as having a large gymnasium), sanitary facilities (large number of bathrooms and showers) and food-serving capacity (cafeteria). When do we go to the shelters? One or more shelters may be opened after a significant disaster has left a large number of people homeless.
