The only truly independent advice will be from a trusted friend or relative or by hiring a professional financial advisor. Hire a fee-based advisor who does not accept commissions, not a commissioned advisor. Commissioned advisors have to sell you something to make a living. Unscrupulous ones may steer you towards investments that generate high profits for them rather than high profits for you. An advisor who charges an hourly fee does not have that conflict of interest. They are paid the same regardless of what they recommend, so they can recommend what is in your best interest. I respectfully disagree with the previous answer that recommends going to a bank. Banks do not give independent advice. They recommend their own products regardless of whether they perform well. Why? It generates profits for the bank.
