Where can I get Car Insurance for over 80 year olds?
Well, as you’ve probably found out, very, very few insurance carriers will write someone who’s 80. The elderly population, in general, actually has more accidents per mile driven than newly licensed teens. From my personal experience, many don’t usually stop driving until they have a major accident. To answer your question – depending on where you live, your state may have an “assigned risk” pool, where the agent submits the high risk application to the “pool” and it’s “assigned” to a carrier by the state. That’s likely the only place you’ll be able to get insurance – not even Progressive will write a new policy for a driver that age. Also, the driver will likely have to have a medical & vision exam within 30 days of the policy being issued, and have a medical statement filled out by their doctor. The BEST thing for the over 70 crowd, is to keep their auto policy with the same carrier. Most companies won’t cancel you until you have a couple accidents, even if you’re over 70.
