Where can I get a receiver for the polar orbiting satellites?
There are two common methods for obtaining an APT receiver: • Purchase a receiver made specifically for receiving the polar orbiting satellites. This option will supply the highest quality images. MultiFAX sells the MF-R1–an excellent, high quality, low cost weather satellite receiver that can be used for both polar orbiters (NOAA, Meteor) and, in conjunction with a downconverter, the geostationary weather satellites (GOES, Meteosat). MultiFAX also sells the popular Vanguard WEPIX-2000 receiver. • Modify an off-the-shelf scanner. Many people have found this to be a low cost alternative for APT reception. Almost any scanner that can tune to the 137 to 138 MHz band can be simply modified to receive acceptable quality pictures. The modification requires the replacement of a filter with a 0.01 microFarad capacitor.
