The NCPDP implementation guides or standard manuals used in retail pharmacy transactions provide technical guidance and education on how to implement the standard format for these transactions. The guides are available from the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) at http://www.ncpdp.org. There is a fee for non-members of NCPDP to obtain a copy of the NCPDP implementation guides. In most cases, depending on the size of the organization and the volume of transactions being done, the organization will work with (and depend on) their practice management software vendor or health care clearinghouse to meet the HIPAA Transactions and Code Sets requirements and may not need to purchase the implementation guides.
