With all the fires around Southern California, it can be difficult to keep up with which ones are located where, and what new areas are being threatened. The Los Angeles Times has created on its Web site a special Google Maps interactive map of the Southern California wildfires; you can find it here: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-la-fire-map-html,0,7464337.htmlstory Currently the map covers the fires now going on in these areas: La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta, Glendale, Pasadena, Altadena, and Big Tujunga Canyon. Like other Google Maps, it lets you zoom in and pan around, and it has icons revealing the locations of the various fires. Clicking on a link below the image takes you to a larger Google Maps image that can be manipulated in more ways. What’s more, the left-hand margin has links to stories and updates on the fires. Late in the evening on Saturday, August 29th

The updated map of the Station fire near Los Angeles shows major spread of the fire on the north side. The map shows heat detected by satellites at 2:16 a.m. Sunday morning. The red areas are the most recently burned. The Morris fire to the east shows no recent heat. As of early Sunday morning the Station fire had grown to 35,000 acres and had come to within 5 miles of the community of Acton. The southeast wind of Saturday changed to a down-canyon wind overnight, pushing it closer to some residential areas. Sources: http://www.examiner.
