– You are only going to find passenger lists of immigrants coming into the USA. There are no records of departures from England and Wales, until 1890. If you live in the USA, visit your nearest Mormon Family History Centre (FHC) library or the National Archives and check out their records of passenger lists. First you need to know when the immigrant arrived. If he was still alive in 1900, he will be in the US census. There is a column on the US census showing naturalisation, date of arrival, how many years in the country, citizenship (Na – Naturalised citizen; Pa – first papers and Al – Alien). If your ancestor disembarked in New York between 1846 and 1896, you will find the passenger lists are not indexed, so you need to know the year they came.
