There is always BLM land where the camping is usually free but it is much further away than you may want to be and without any facilities. There is always camping along the Poudre River. We like to go to Jack’s Gulch which I would think be about a three to four hour drive from Denver. It’s about a 2 hour drive for me at least. There aren’t any showers there but you can always buy one of those showers in a bag. There are bathrooms and potable water. Last summer it was $17.00/night for tent camping. If you do end up going to Jack’s Gulch I want to add that at the top of the hill (and you know which hill I am talking about if and when you get there) there are a few spots where people usually pitch a tent for a few nights for free and all along the road out to Jack’s Gulch people will pitch a tent wherever. But keep in mind there aren’t any facilities at these sites. Also, while you are there check out the Buddhist retreat and see the Great Stupa.
