Where can I find pictures of the first subway cars in New York?
I’m looking for pictures of the first subway cars, or early Subway cars in New York. Please help! Thanks! A: As a Charter member of the NY Transit Museum I feel that I have to correct one of the answers. The NYTM does NOT have a subway car from 1904. It does have BRT elevated cars (wooden) from 1903 but those never operated in service in the subway. The early IRT car in the Museum is from 1916. One of the earliest cars used in the subway is not in the museum’s collection. August Belmont’s private subway car “Mineola” is in the collection of the Shoreline Trolley Museum in Brandford/East Haven, CT (I am a member there too). http://www.bera.org . Unfortunately the condition of the car is very bad that it is kept under cover in a car barn. The cost of restoration is way to much. www.nycsubway.org is a good source for pictures of early subway cars. Pictures of the first IRT cars can be found here: http://www.nycsubway.org/articles/irtbook_ch8.html http://www.nycsubway.org/articles/theymove
