Where Can I Find More Information on Threatened and Endangered Species?
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service administers the Federal Endangered Species Program. Accurate, current information on all aspects of the program, including considerable information on listed species and recovery efforts, is contained on their Endangered Species Program Web Site. Confusion may occur because many states have their own endangered species programs. A number of species that are not on the Federal list of endangered or threatened species are listed as such by one or more state governments. Information on state-listed species may be available on state wildlife agency Web sites. Keep in mind that only some populations or some subspecies of federally listed plants and animals may be listed as threatened and endangered. Checking the list carefully may help you understand apparent contradictions, such as why hunters and trappers are allowed to take timber wolves in Alaska, but not in the lower 48 states.
