Don’t know any good meteorite-hunting grounds in SoCal, but one trick to finding them is to rig up a fair-sized magnet on the end of a non-magnetic pole of some kind. Walk the walk and if the magnet passes over any iron meteorites it’ll either pick it up or you’ll feel the tug as the magnet passes over it. Of course you’ll get some metal-rich terrestrial rocks too, but always look for the cratering caused by the object passing through the atmosphere and being partially melted. Also, an iron meteorite of a given size will always weight considerably more than a simple terrestrial iron of the same size.
