See page 23 in Prof. John L. GADDIS’ book “The Cold War / A New History”, published at Penguin Books in 2007. I remember lots of items mentioned in it, as I was born in 1939 and grew up in East Germany.But GADDIS’ book is a page turner not only for those who are interested in history. Prof.GADDIS spoke about the fact that the generation of elderly people has to be aware of the fact that today’s generation is not able to understand so many things and to associate many names with historical facts, names they never heard of. I strongly recommend this book! – I remember the liberation of my home-town ,the Mecklenburg capital Schwerin (today that of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) by U.S. troops in May 45.
