Due to constitutional and statutory speedy trial requirements, caseflow management was first applied to criminal cases. The development of criminal-case-processing time standards contributes to effective caseflow management. The American Bar Association’s (ABA) Section on Criminal Justice has adopted standards relating to speedy trials. The ABA has also published Standard 2.52: Standards of Timely Disposition, in Standards on Judicial Administration, Vol. 2: Standards Relating to Trial Courts (Chicago: American Bar Association, 1992). Standard 2.52(e) prescribes the following time standards: • Felony: 90 percent should be adjudicated or otherwise concluded within 120 days from the date of arrest; 98 percent within 180 days; and 100 percent within one year. • Misdemeanor: 90 percent of all misdemeanors, infractions, and other nonfelonies should be adjudicated or otherwise concluded within 30 days from date of arrest or citation, and 100 percent within 90 days. • Persons in pretrial cust
