Due to constitutional and statutory speedy trial requirements, caseflow management was first applied to criminal cases. The development of criminal-case-processing time standards contributes to effective caseflow management. The American Bar Association’s (ABA) Section on Criminal Justice has adopted standards relating to speedy trials. The ABA has also published Standard 2.52: Standards of Timely Disposition, in Standards on Judicial Administration, Vol. 2: Standards Relating to Trial Courts (Chicago: American Bar Association, 1992).
