Where can I find info. about shetland sheepdogs?(shelties)?
On the web, you can go to ASSA (American Shetland Sheepdog Association) It is the AKC “parent” club for the breed. You can also do a search for local Sheltie clubs in your area, as well as breeders. If you go AKC.org you can find a calendar of shows (conformation and agility) held in your area and go and watch to see them “up close and personal” and meet owners and breeders. The “bible” is a book called Sheltie Talk. Shelties are supposed to be from 13 to 16 inches at the shoulder, though some are smaller and some are larger. They are in the herding group, and do have herding tendencies (though nothing like a Border Collie). They are very bright dogs, among the best at obedience and agility, and pretty easy to train as they want “to do” with their person. They are a pretty sensitive breed, and can quickly read an owner’s displeasure. Often, a “correction” is a simple “oh oh!” They are active and athletic, and will want much exercising. its getting hard to find shetland sheep dogs because their not as popular as in the 70s just like irish setters you cant find very many of them anymore if the popularity goes down they stop breeding them n go to something thats popular.hope someday both breeds will become popular again i like both breeds.
