Where can I find credible information on what olympic runners have to endure in training?
I recently read “Running with the Buffaloes” by Chris Lear, which skillfully chronicles the 1998 Univ. of Colorado cross country team. The Buffaloes have national aspirations for the individual and team titles. The book details all the twists and turns of the coach guiding his team through grueling workouts, injuries, personal problems, and other hardships. It’s a very good book, so I won’t give away what happens. Admittedly it’s not Olympic level, but it is at NCAA Div. I championship caliber. Many of the runners in the book will contend for the upcoming US Olympic track team. Steve Slattery, a freshman in the book, made the Olympic Marathon team. But just to give you an idea, on an “easy” day between two hard workouts, CU’s #1 runner completed a mountainous15-mile run in about 1:37.
