Where Can I Find Alternative Certification Programs for Teachers in Houston?
Alternative Certification Programs (ACP) are intended for prospective teachers who already have a bachelor’s degree in a field outside of education, and are the most common way of attaining Texas teaching certification. Alternative certification requires a 4-year degree, attendance in an accredited certification program and a probationary period of student teaching before becoming certified. ACP programs can certify teacher in subject areas including special and bilingual education, English, biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, social studies, mathematics, history, music and art, physical education and health. Centers in Houston offer alternative certification include San Jacinto College, Region 4 Education Service Center, North Harris College, ACT Houston and Houston Community College.
