If you want to go down the route of electronic solutions the best Sat Nav unit I have found is the Garmin Nuvi 760. It works for the car but does have a special function for pedestrian as well.

viamichelin.com – for UK – (you have to scroll down page to find on foot choice) gives you directions and times just like in car EDIT – eddie – cannot use car route as it would take you on major routes and across motorways, roundabouts etc – also can go shorter routes then by car eg pedestrian shopping areas!!!!!!!
