The thundering voice of Liam Neeson’s Zeus shouting “Release the Kraken” in Clash of the Titans 2010 trailer, might be the most memorable aspect of this movie. The phrase was famously uttered in the original 1981 version of the film by the character Calibos played by Neil McCarthy. The “Clash of the Titans” remake is the most embarrassing black eye for Greeks since the short-lived McGyro. The update of the 1981 classic B-movie epic is a lifeless, CGI-heavy mish mash of bastardized mythology and punchless action. And I didn’t even realize it was in 3D until the speedometer said I was going 555 mph on the way home and I found the plastic specs on my head. “Clash of the Titans” is the perfect Hollywood miscalculation – a big budget, starry-eyed compromise that tries to be everything to everyone. But we end up with a maddeningly paced linear quest that’s akin to watching a buddy play a video game.
