Where can I find a free nice-looking old-style serif font (e.g. Palatino, Garamond) that supports ligatures, real small caps, a set of matching math symbols, and old style numerals, and is fully compatible with commonly used packages including amsmath?

With this sentence you unfortunately excluded the kpfonts as the only font package I would have recommended. I personally use it for nearly all my documents because it is one of the rare complete font sets and it looks good to me. But that’s a matter of taste. You may try mathpazo or the pxfonts.
