Keep checking your local paper. I got lucky, when I called about getting a shepard, they told me that they had no choice but to GIVE them away for free because one of the pups had medical problems so there is a law that if one has a problem, you cannot sell them (well in my state that is the law) I got my puppy and 6 years past, and no problems. Also keep checking local animal shelters too. There might in fact be a maltese puppy looking for a home, all you have to pay is a donation fee. Chances are slim but it never hurts to keep looking.
