If you’re looking for a historic hotel, The Hotel Monaco is a luxury Art Deco-themed hotel right near all the action on Wabash Ave. The Hotel Burnham (Washington St) is late 1800s/Victorian, with authentic restoration. The James Hotel, The Talcott, Hotel Sax, The Allerton and the Whitehall (The Rolling Stones stayed there during one of their tours) are all boutique style hotels with luxurious amenities. the Ambassador East is a bit further north, about 1200 N State St. This is like the grand dame of old Chicago, but the rooms might be modernized. Even if you don’t stay there, stop by the Pump Room for a drink. The bar area is crammed with black and white photos of all the old movie stars who used to stop there before taking the Lake Shore Limited train East to NY.
