Depends if you use a CDMA or GSM phone, (CDMA are Verizon and Sprint, all the rest are GSM) most software you will find is for GSM phones. Go to http://www.download.com/ and type “mobile phone software” into the search bar. Some are free, some are free to try, and some cost a few dollars. You can filter them to get only the free ones if that is what your want. You will need a cable to connect your phone to your computer, it is usually called a “mobile office kit” and is available for a few bucks from either your phone company or the maker of the phone.
