Where can I download icons for major companies – e.g., Amazon, IBM, etc…?
You should be able to download a gif or jpg image of a company’s logo simply going to their web site, right-clicking the image, and saving it to a location on your hard drive. You can then convert this to an icon using a graphics utility. A good free one is IrfanView (second time I’ve recommended this today) http://www.irfanview.com. You open the image and save it as an .ico file, and then it’s suitable for use as such. There are also a number of utilities that can extract icons from Windows programs (.exe, .dll). I have one called Icon Snatcher, that I downloaded (for free) from Ziff Davis (publishers of PC Magazine) http://downloads.zdnet.com. I think it’s still there. Caution – company logos are invariably copyrighted, and you need to be careful about how you use them. Make sure you check their acceptable use policies, or you open yourself up to an infringment suit.
The site contains logos from companies around the world. Logos are in vector format so you can enlarge or shrink them without any loss of quality. From a browse through the site, the images appear to have file extensions of .ai, .eps, or .cdr, all of which are vector formats that can be opened in Adobe Illustrator. You can also right click and save the .gif of the image displayed on the website. Sources: http://www.brandsoftheworld.
