Try http://www.setiathome.com The screen saver is not much to look at, just a graph floating around the screen, but what it does is download a small chunk of data collected from the huge telescope at Arecibo and lets you help search for signs of life on other worlds. The program uses your computer whenever the screen saver kicks in, and it analyzes the little chunk of data for patterns, then sends it back to the research facility. Of course, your computer has to be connected to the internet to be able to send and receive those little packets. It hardly uses any space, and you never notice it running. There is a package called the BOINC manager that lets you download other research packages as well.
