I think you might be looking for “balsa wood.” It’s commonly used by miniaturists to make miniature furniture, etc., and can easily be cut with Xacto knives (which also have tiny little “saw” bits you can buy and use), painted, etc. It’s rather lightweight but reasonably strong. You should be able to buy it at hobby stores (the kind that sell supplies for model railroads and for doll house enthusiasts) and at craft stores.
