From the US, there are only a handful of airlines that operate service to Australia, so your options are limited. United and Qantas run non-stop from SFO and LAX to Sydney, so those are the easiest options. Air New Zealand also flies from both SFO and LAX to Auckland, and you can connect from there to most major Australian cities. If you’re going at the end of this year, or next year, V Australia is going to launch service from LAX to Sydney, which may spur some sale fares, on December 15th. Since this is a long-haul route with not very much competition, it is tough to find cheap tickets, especially since most airlines are charging large fuel surcharges. I’d say if you can find a fare for less than $1200 round-trip, you’ve got a great deal, but they could also be much more expensive, I haven’t flown the route in a year and a half.
