Simple math. Only one in a million creatures dies in such a way that it will get preserved in rock. It’s impossible to see what’s in a rock without a lot of work, so we only see mostly fossils that are exposed by chance. So take a million times a million and that’s the chance we’ll find a fossil. And scientists have found about 7.3 million of them. If there is a “shortage” of transitional fossils, whatever that means, it could be because those transitional species were not particularly successful or numerous or present for a long time. for example there are a LOT of trilobite fossils, because they existed for a very very long time. But far fewer precursors to trilobites as they persisted only for a few million years, not like 300 million for the trilobites. See: http://en.wikipedia.
