Where are the Rainforests of the World?
Sometimes when we read a book the setting of the story (where the story takes place) is nothing like where we live. In order for the story to have meaning to us, we should find out more about that place. The story of The Great Kapok Tree is set in the Amazon Rainforest, a place very different from Kentucky. Print out one World Map for each partner in the group. Steps: 1. The Reader should read the story again aloud, paying close attention to the world map that Ms. Cherry provided as an illustration at the beginning and end of the story. The reader should then close the book, and not allow anyone to look at the maps and “copy” predictions. 2. The Materials Manager should provide the World Map, a pencil, and a green crayon to each partner. 3. Each partner should predict where they think any Rainforests are in the world, and shade that section in very lightly with a pencil on their map.
