WHERE ARE THE NEW MUSICALS?
But however slickly done, revivals and revues aren’t going to last us forever. Already we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel in both categories – as two of this season’s bigger Broadway flops, ”Can-Can” and ”Perfectly Frank,” so dramatically demonstrated. Our Michael Bennetts and Stephen Sondheims won’t be with us forever, either, and Shubert Alley isn’t exactly flooded with successors. Among new musical directors, one finds only Tommy Tune and the still fledgling ”Penzance” staging team of Wilford Leach and Graciela Daniele; for songwriters, our hopes ride on such promising newcomers as Carol Hall (”The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”) and William Finn (”March of the Falsettos”). Yes, it would be nice to think that the critics were just being peevish when they took exception to bestowing a musical award for 1980-81. The sad truth is that this season’s exception may well become the rule in seasons to come.
