Where are the Juan Fernandez islands?
Juan Fernandez is the name of a group of three islands which lie about 400 miles west of Chile in the Pacific Ocean. These islands are actually part of Chile. The Juan Fernandez islands were discovered by a Spanish explorer named Juan Fernandez. They were discovered in 1563. The three islands are called Robinson Crusoe, Santa Clara and Alejandro Selkirk. The area of all three combined is only 56 square miles. The population of the total group is 615. Largest of the three islands is Robinson Crusoe. Over 400 Spanish speaking people live here. This island is famous as the place where Alexander Selkirk stayed alone for more than four years from 1704 until 1709. The English writer Daniel Defoe partly based his book called “Robinson Crusoe” on Selkirk’s adventures.
