Where are the files I put in the “tmp” folder?

The physical location of the tmp folder has changed. It is the same place on Windows and Macintosh computers, but in unix, if you use Secure File Transfer, you will find your files in /var/tmp. For those who are not familiar with this, it is an ideal location to place files you want to give to someone else that are far too large to send through e-mail. One word of warning, though: the files in this location are automatically deleted one month after the file’s modification date. If you move something in here that has an old modification date, the file may be deleted that same night, even though you may think that it might stick around for one month. In Windows, to access the tmp folder, type \\crl\tmp in your address bar. In Mac OS X, connect to the server smb://crl.ucsd.edu/tmp. In classic Mac OS, connect to the AppleShare folder “tmp”. You must be on the UCSD to gain access to these locations.
