Where are the bumper stickers?
November 3, 2008 This is supposed to be the most exciting political election in decades. So where are all the political bumper stickers? In traffic in the city and suburbs for three hours, we spotted just two tiny Obama stickers. Joelle McGinnis, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Tollway, has also noticed the dearth of political stickers. “Maybe people don’t want to mess up their paint,” McGinnis said. Or maybe people are so sure Obama will win Illinois that they haven’t bothered advertising their preference to other drivers. This doesn’t mean people don’t like bumper stickers in general. Geoffrey Smith, who works in the service department at Evanston Subaru, says he sees as many stickers as he has in his 15 years in the business, despite car leasing and painted bumpers. And he still doesn’t like them, no matter their message. “It’s a lot of trouble to get the stickers off,” said Smith, who has seen cars with as many 15 bumper stickers. “With painted bumpers, it leaves a film on there.” S
