Where are the Best Small Plates in Portland, Oregon?

The party I was with could only speculate that the bartender was hung over. He was bloated, slow, distracted, forgot my drink order, and not at all concerned with being charming, or making any effort at good customer service. I had a $9 margarita that was 75% ice and then still only half full, so that was a bad start. It all ended by having to wait with empty plates and all of our drink glasses for a good twenty minutes while the bartender was in the open kitchen eating and throwing food at the chef. Despite the pleasant environment and decent food, I won’t go back to Bar Mingo just to be ignored.Pros + Good FoodCons – Terrible Service

Recently went for first time visit to 23 Hoyt. Food was spectacular, high quality, nice proportions, and tasty. We had the whole gamet of courses: Appetizers, Oysters on Half Shell with Minonette, and the Scallops with mushrooms, in which they were seared perfect. Salad course we had the Ahi Salad and the Beet Salad. Ahi was thinly sliced and everything comlimented the Ahi, wish there was a little more green apple served with Beet Salad, but that is being very picky; it was delicous. For entrees we had the Steelhead which was nice and moist and the Halibut which melted in your mouth. For dessert we shared the coconut cake which was delicate and a nice Tawny Port with a small serving of vanilla bean ice cream that the kitchen provided as a special treat upon request, which brought out the caramel in the tawny port. GREAT EVENING!!!Pros + Excellent Quality Food, Great AtmosphereCons – Pricey, but Great Quality Ingredients.

Chef Chris Thompson has done an incredible job of presenting excellent Italian Food that compares with the East Coast Italian Dining Experience. We were asked when making our reservation, if anyone in our party had a food allergy the chef should be aware of. A huge bonus before we even arrived. When arriving, we were greeted by a delightful hostess who seated us right away even though our dining companions were running a little late. Erin, (our charming, beautiful, intelligent, and personable waitress was marvelous) assured us not to worry and we had wine and some of the best calamari ever while waiting. When our friends arrived, they were seated immediately and had wine and salad, after which our orders were taken for entrees. Two lasagnas, one catch of the day, and one pasta specialty of the house with Italian sausage. All four, perfectly prepared, served eye appealingly, and delish beyond words.I was invited to come back to the kitchen to meet the chef after offering our co

Another new chef as of June 2008. Prices are inappropriate: $35 for a ribeye steak (that’s ribeye, not filet), $15 for a bowl of fish stew, $20 for risotto with green peas, $14 for a bacon cheeseburger. On the lunch menu, spaghetti with a fresh tomato sauce is $16. Seriously. The food tastes pretty good, but the prices for relatively common dishes have become insulting. The chopped salad for $14 contains one slice of chopped bacon, about two ounces of chicken, and maybe an ounce of ham. It does arrive with two deviled egg halves, however, that are quite tasty.Otherwise, the outdoor garden is more beautiful than ever, and their cocktails are about the same price as you’d expect in any upscale venue. I’ll continue to enjoy drinks in the garden, but will dine elsewhere. Service is generally excellent.Pros + Beautiful setting, good serviceCons – Food is too expensive for the quality

You must experience the small plate eating for yourself. It gives you a chance to try many different dishes. Everything is perfect – from the atmosphere to the service. We’ve closed this place down a few times!Pros + Great drinks and fabulous foodCons – Closes too early!
