Where are the Best Small Plates in Houston, Texas?
I’m not a big wine buff, but my girlfriend is. The initial draw to Oporto was the tapas. We love tapas, but don’t like the hassle of Rice Village (Mi Luna) parking and crowds. I am really glad we found Oporto! The ambiance is pretty nice. Dark wood & beautiful bar. The cozy lounge area was taken so we sat at a table. The chairs were cool (metal with spoons as decorations) but could have been more comfortable. Unfortunately, I forgot our waitress’ name, she was truly wonderful. Very accommodating, funny, and friendly. My girlfriend ordered some wine. I don’t recall the label, but she loved it as it matched well with most of our tapas. I had the sangria, which was quite tasty and refreshing. For tapas, we ordered the Italian sausage and meatballs (ok), shrimp piri-piri (good), caldo verde (light with a hearty mouth feel, good flavor), empanadas (excellent, matched well with the quince jam), baked brie (always great), Portuguese tiramisu (not what it’s called, I can’t rememb
Browse the long list of items on the Mi Luna tapas menu, and you know this place wants to do it right. With dishes like oxtail (one of my favorites) and at least 2 types of pulpo (octopus), Mi Luna is doing tapas with true Spanish flair. The standout dishes for me are the pulpo with potatoes, the oxtail, the patatas bravas, and the garlic marinated mushrooms. A least a couple of these can be had on the happy hour menu, where cheap eats abound at a mere $3/pop. But it’s not just the food, it’s the drink as well. The sangria is wonderfully fruity and if you are lucky enough to get the bartender from Miami, the mojitos are some of the best in town. Get a pitcher, drink with friends, and enjoy the live music that starts playing around 9pm on weekend nights. Pros + As close as you can get to spanish tapas in HoustonCons – parking in Rice Village is a pain
Great atmosphere – checkGreat food – checkGreat service – not even close. When going to restaurants of this nature (i.e. not Outback), I would hope that the service is of a much higher standard. Unfortunately this was not the case on my first visit to this restaurant. This was by far the quickest dinner seating I had gone through not including meals at Chilis. By the time I was seated until we were asked for deserts it was 40 minutes. The main course was brought to our table before we had finished the glasses of wine that accompanied our appetizers. Then, we were offered the desert menu and then our check before we had finished the wine that came with our main course!! I understand the need to “turn over tables” but this was ridiculous in a restaurant that was not full and with no one waiting for a table. To top it off, we were asked by several different waiters if we were ready to pay. Here is a clue, when my credit card is sitting in the folder, then I am ready to pay. The wait sta
