Wow… just found this site! I sooo much loved Pier 23 many years ago (about 10 in number) 😉 i wonder if it is still the same! Great athmosphere, nice music and very nice people working there! i wonder if anyone of them is still there… Denis, Frank, Santos, Thorsten…. Hope to be there one day again! 😉 Greetings from Austria! I have now read every review ever posted for this establishment and I will now give an accurate review! We arrived at Tommy’s at approx 8:00pm on Friday NIght, we parked directly in front of the restaurant. There were at least 10 people standing outside, so we thought this might be tough! We placed our name on the list and Alex the hostess, who was very gracious, told us to enjoy the bar area while waiting! We were seated under 15 minutes and our waiter Juan was very patient and professional! The chips and salsa are the best I have had in San Francisco. The margaritas were great… had one on the rocks and blended, both were potent and the blended was with the top aged tequilla, very smooth and tasty! We ordered a combination plate and a grilled fish plate which were both very good. If you are hungry, the food does arrive quickly, this was appropriate for our hunger level. The wait staff and hostess checked on us often and were not pushy at all. We asked for our bill event

I dig the vibe, the people, and the food. Drinks were okay which is why it only gets 4 stars. And of course I feel whack for going to Mexican food outside of the mission, but this place is worth it. Pros + The green stuff is super good.Cons – Far drive from the mission.

Mexican food is one of several types of cuisine that can be very good even when it is super-cheap and in some cases when it is expensive it is actually LESS good.Even though I had heard some good things about Maya my expectations were still not that high mostly due to the above fact.Fortunately I was pleasantly surprised though not blown-away or anything. The decor is nice and the place is large so you can go with big groups. The service was okaythere were a few minor mishaps we had with the service but they remained friendly throughout it all so it wasnt too bad.To start with you can taste the freshness in their tortillas and their chips it reminded me of the tortilla chips Ive had many times in Mexico itselfthough of course in Mexico it costs about one-tenth the price.I started with three tortas that were solid and very fresh-tasting. Other appetizers we tried were also quite tasty. The hangar steak which I had was excellentvery flavorful and done perfectly. They had a pork tenderloin

We went here at 10 on a saturday for dinner, not the smartest plan since by that time it seems to be a much better bar scene than restaurant atmosphere. There was no hostess to take us to the dining room because she was too busy having drinks at the bar and flirting with guys but we were able to track down a waiter to ask for some menus. Besides the lack of service in the beginning the rest was fine. Good chips and nice spicy salsa. The margaritas were good, not the best but ok. The good was also good. Our waiter, though exhausted and overworked did his best to accomodate us and was friendly. I’d go back here, but I’d choose a better time frame if it’s food I’m coming for instead of the bar. Pros + chips n salsaCons – bad hostess
