I have been a loyal customer of this little restaurant since it first opened. The Dharma Cafe to me is maybe more notable for what’s missing than for what is there-what’s missing is a predictable corporate layout with lot’s of pre-packaged food from Sysco or some other megalith food purveyor, mind numbing music played so loud as to require you shout your order to the server, and most importantly, isolated, disassociated, and uncaring staff. What you will find at the Dharma Cafe is consistently great food, which is always fresh and flavorful. The atmosphere is delightful, and to the great credit of Susan and John, you can dress up or dress down as the whim suits you and feel just as at home in either attire. I am constantly impressed with the unique and creative creations that John and Susan come up with. Their menu is always evolving and the specials remain enticing and satisfying. With a wide selection of inexpensive breakfast items, this restaurant has something perfect for everyone. I love brunch, and I love the community dining experience that goes with it. I always go with the french toast, hot chocolate, and a side of bacon, but my friends go crazy for the pancakes and the omelets. Cafe Laurier is small by most restaurant standards, but this little joint does not disappoint in the areas that count. It calls itself New American, but Cafe Laurier’s chef uses French techniques, resulting in high quality, artfully prepared cuisine. On a beautiful sunny day, we were looking for nice patio seating for a girl’s lunch out. Think “Sex and the City” style lunch – where would you go? Turns out Cafe Laurier was the perfect place for intimate girl talk and alfresco dining. With royal blue umbrellas and comfortable seating, not to mention a breath of fresh air, the patio was the perfect spot for our rendezvous. We started with the crab cake, 100% pure lump crabmeat, lightly crisped and oh-so-good – one of my favorite dishes here. When you want a dining experience that is a little different without being daring, relaxed without being personal (I generally don’t like to know the waitperson’s bio), and in an atmosphere that seems family operated, Cafe Montrose is an excellent choice. The mussels were exactly what you want in a plate of mussels – no extraordinary sauce, garnish or presentation – justly carefully steamed in broth and served with french (Belgian?) bread. I had pork loin with brussels sprouts. The pork was prepared with a crusty almost batter-like breading and tended to be chewy – not dry, just chewy – and served with an excellent brown sauce. The brussels sprouts were well prepared, but nothing to write home about. The desserts that have chocolate specify “Belgian” chocolate. This restaurant was highly recommended as a small, romantic place with a great wine list. I have to admit to being turned off when I first pulled up to see that it was in a strip center, but once you enter, the big city location is forgotten. This restaurant is charming. The waiters are knowledgable and attentive without being all over you. There are no reservations so go early because we had a two and a half hour dinner (arriving at 6:30) and did not see anyone leave while we were there – Tables don’t turn often! We ordered two bottles of wine (one white & one red) and corked them & took them with us when we left. Their wine list is wonderfully extensive with a focus on French wines of course. The escargot was fairly flavorless, so I would not order that again, but my friend’s crawfish was delightful in a delicate sauce with a puff pastry. We both ordered steaks as our entree.
