Where are the Best Cheap Eats in Portland, Oregon?
I agree with all comments from the previous review. The staff is wonderful, kind and personable. The food is superb. Fresh wrapped is good if it is not fried. All soup is scrumptious. The fried lobster bites are awsome (especially with the sauce)… the list goes on. Eat anything and you will be happy. Drinks are great and made by a bartender who knows their stuff.Big screen that is showing cartoons (or sportscenter) as you are listening to music.I miss the live DJ, but the staff generally has a good choice in music (or Aqua Teen Hunger Force). Not too crowded… and to me, this is the best part. This is an intimate and cozy bar with a non-smoking room in the front, a smoking room in the back (with great wall-art), and a couple tables out front during the dry season. Highly recommended! You must go there and try it out yourself!Pros + food, drinks, intimate atmosphere
Let me Defend Pho Van against all the negativity by the “ethnic pho eaters”. I keep hearing complaints about about the prices. Essentially it comes down to paying 1$ more for the price compared to other Pho Places in town. However, keep in mind the $1 difference one is paying for, in return you are getting a nice, clean atmosphere, adequate service, and consistent food without the “THUMB SPECIAL” (Food servers bring your pho bowl out with a thumb or two in your bowl, Pho Oregon is notorious for this). The other sour point from many reviewers is the poor service. I find the service adequate. Personally Vietnamese and Chinese restaurant’s have a bad to adequate service in general, so any service is usually a plus. Personal Favorites:Best BUN MANG VIT in town (Duck with Bamboo Shoots)Best Egg Rolls in townPros + Nice atmostphere, good foodCons – Entrees a dollar more compared to other Vietnamese Eateries
Last night was my first night there when eight of us agreed to meet there at 6pm on a Friday night. They pushed two tables together for us but this probably isn’t the best place to go with a group greater than five. We ordered dinner at the counter (a tiny bit of a drag as noted below, but minor) and the cashier recommended a glass of Nebblio ($7). The wine was so good I ended up getting a bottle ($25) and sharing with the rest of the adults. I was there with my teenage daughter so we split a salad and each ordered an entree. The salad was simply a mix of greens but the shallot vinegrette dressing was fantastic. The bread they served on the table was very fresh served with olive oil and balsamic. I ordered the whole wheat pasta with garlic oil. My daughter had the penne alfredo. My pasta was cooked well but I wouldn’t order this again. It had lots of garlic and bits of green olives but was otherwise rather plain. I wish the dish had something else in it like greens or brocc
Other reviewers have already summed up Rocco’s pretty well, but I had a few things to contribute. Their biggest flaw, by far, is that they make their most popular varieties (Cheese, Pepperoni, Sausage, etc) way too far in advance. But here’s the deal– don’t let the pre-made stuff tempt you. Find a menu. Notice that for the same price, you can order a personal pizza with whatever toppings you want. They’ll make it on the spot, and it comes out of the oven in much better shape than the stuff in the warming case. It takes a bit of savvy to get what you want at Roccos, but it’s easy to get used to the cheap prices and hip people.
Order the burgers and Onion rings! This place is usually packed during lunch. Its a nice short drive into the country with a roadhouse feel. Rub elbows with bikers and Intel workers. Did I mention the amazing burgers? The prices and service are great! They serve RC if you happen to be the designated driver. Its a nice touch! A great place to stop on the way back from pumpkin patch or getting your Christmas tree.Pros + Burgers, onion rings, price, and serviceCons – Sometimes a long wait
