Where are the Best Cheap Eats in Portland, Oregon?
I have gone there a few times for take out with my girlfriend. The value and the food has always been excellent except for their soups. The soup portions are very very very very small. Our take out order of soup didn’t even fill the small container even though we got the “bowl” instead of the “cup.” We were told that it’s one ladle of soup for the cup, and 2 ladles for the bowl. I feel sorry for whomever gets the cup and thinks they accidently drained 2/3rds of it on the walk home. Everything else has been great so i can’t fault them too much. Just realize that for the price, the soup portions are very very small. Being on 23rd though, it is pretty cheap for pretty good food. You won’t be wowed by it, but for how much you’re paying, it’s really quite good.Pros + entrees, priceCons – value of soup
As it’s only a couple blocks from our home, we’ve been eating there regularly for three plus years. The food is solid, and the service usually good. Is it the greatest breakfast place? no. If you’re looking for a breakfast “event”, I wouldn’t choose it. But when we want a straight forward breakfast at an ok price, it’s our top choice. We almost never go to Tin Shed because by the time the food arrives, I’ve written a novel and eaten someone’s child. Helser’s is ready and willing to serve half portions of most anything and will make you most anything you ask for. Best is before 9 am, especially during the week, when Helser’s serves a limited menu of sane portions for a modest price.Pros + nice people, good location, amazing baconCons – noisy, busy on weekends
This restaurant is a gem, set in what I believe is an old Dairy Queen or other fast food building. The food is seasonal, with a specials menu that usually is almost half the size of the regular menu. The quality of the fresh and perfectly cooked sea food is beyond compare in the Portland area. If this restaurant was downtown, it would be impossible to get a table! Everything is made from scratch, from the wonderful soups, to the fantastic scones that accompany your breakfast selection on the weekends. Fresh Salmon or Halibut dishes run are under $18, including soup or salad, and the portions are large. I usually cannot pass up the crab cakes, which have ALOT of wonderful crab in them, and are always cooked perfectly (never greasy). The cheap eats menu is great, served during certain hours at dinner, this menu has 5-7 selections for $2.95, with a selection that changes each month. True that sometimes the food can take a while (up to thirty five minutes), but every dish is cooked to order and well worth the wait. There is an extensive appetizer menu to help pass the time while you wait for your main entree. It is a little weird how the food trickles out one plate at a time, but it appears to be a vey small kitchen with not a lot of staff. Highly recommend the stuffed artichoke heart platter. This place is very friendly to omnivores and herbivores alike. The best time to go is off peak hours, the service, timing, and noise level are all improved at these times. Pros + Great selection for meat eaters, vegetarians, and vegans. Cons – Sometimes there is a little wait for a table.
I eat at Du’s at least a few times a month and have done so for several years. The chicken teriyaki is great and the portion a good size, though the most recent time I went I noticed there was more salad and less chicken then normal, so not sure if they are changing their portion sizes or someone new was making up the boxes. I usually get one a split it in half with my co-worker, we’re both ladies who like to eat but not be uncomfortably full. So for us the price is cheap just over $3.00 per person. I really enjoy how the salad, salad dressing, rice and teriyaki all go together. Both the teriyaki sauce and dressing are great. It can be very busy at lunch time and sometimes a little wait but they are a small place trying to serve A LOT of people and they do a great job keeping up with orders.
