Where are the Best Cheap Eats in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania?
This is a fabulous hole-in-the-wall takeout-only place; Pittsburgh seems to mostly have sit-down places with a take-out sideline. But anyway. We’ve been buying food here since just after they opened. I’ve never been disappointed. Zaw’s does all the standard Chinese-American dishes, but better/fresher than other places (get the Tso Chicken to see what I mean). You must try the non-Chinese specialties such as the curried Singapore noodles; take the time to explore the menu, you will be rewarded. I do mean it about the “Chinese-American”; do not expect real Mainland food: also, be aware that this is a strictly stir/deep-fry and boil operation, not really the full range of Chinese cuisine.Some people have mentioned that the place looks dirty.I agree it could certainly use more frequent steam-cleans, on the other hand I’ve never been sick from their food (unlike some other places in town). I only get to the Burgh about once a year since moving to Miami, and I have to tell you that this is one of the first stops we make. You have to make at least one trip to Vincent’s while visiting. The pizza crust is thick and chewy, the sauce is excellent, and the toppings. . . .oh, the toppings! To watch them make this pizza is a wonder. Handfuls – literally – of everything you order go on the pie. Fresh mushrooms, sliced pepperoni piled high (not the regular round cut pepperoni), huge pieces of sausage. . . and never mind the need to order extra cheese. Everything is extra here! A medium pie will generously feed 4 people and leave you stuffed! It was a challenge for me to eat 1 1/2 slices of this delight. And the price is more than reasonable. Unlike some pizzas, this is still great microwaved later, but you must get it fresh to experience pure pleasure. Yeah, yeah, yeah. . . I am 64 years old, and I consider myself an expert at knowing just what makes a good restaurant “good.” Armstrong’s is like an Eat’ N Park with larger portions….but no salad bar. I recall a LONG time ago (mid 1960s) when Armstrong’s had initially opened for business on Mount Washington (Duquesne Heights) before they relocated to “The Galleria”, followed by another move to the corner of Grove Rd at Library Rd. Prices were low, service was good, portions were large, and food quality was only average. At present, Armstrong’s is largely unchanged…..except prices are less inexpensive now. This place is only slightly above average. I’ve learned that the most popular eateries are very often undeserving of their popularity and/or notariety. Just chalk it all up to the fact that human beings are just a species of animal, and feed the livestock. (“slop the hogs!”)Pros + Location, portion size, unpretentious/casual/family dress code.Cons – Prices, long wait to be seated.
My first time at “O” I was behind a person that order a small order of fries.(I did not know it at the time) I said give me the large also. It was enough to feed an army. It is a unique setting in Pittsburgh. Located very close to Pitt and if you want to bring the family then be sure it is day light hours. It is The Dirty “O” and it is Original and Dirty to say the least. If you like Hot Dogs and hustle and bustle of city life then this is the place for you. Hot Dogs are the best and only Primanti Brothers is more Pittsburgh then The Dirty “O”. You have to experience it for yourself! Pros + It is what it is! The name Dirty “O” says it all!Cons – Parking and undesirable hanging out and working there!
