My aim was the dosa truck on Washington Square South; but with the on-off rain I was really taking my chances. Of course the cart wasn’t there. Mamoun’s was the perfect fall back. Other people had the…

Cafe Steinhof is a great neighborhod place in South Park Slope. The kitchen is mostly no-frills, serving up standard German/Austrian fare without fanfare. Monday nights the kitchen serves a choice of two meals, goulash (which is excellent) and fried trout (also good). On other nights the menu is expanded to feature expected items such as saurbraten, schnitzle and chicken paprika. The atmosphere is relaxed, and you’d be served just as well eating at the bar as you would a table. Sunday nights turns into movie night where you can eat and enjoy a beer while watching the week’s selection. The bar has a small selection of German beers, the standout of which is the Kostritzer Schwartbier (if you’ve never tried it, it’s a must, only a small handfull of places in all of NYC have this on tap). I’ll echo most sentiments here – nice, thick burger that comes out quickly – mine was medium well although I asked for medium rare…could have used more salt, cheap buns, and it’s a little smelly (like urinal/stale beer smell). The place looks/is more like a bar than a burger joint. Good burger but not going out of my way again- better burgers in order are: (1) Chelsea Grill (bigger more seasoned burger, cooked to perfection with better fries and better atmosphere) (2) Island Burgers – smaller but thicker -again, cooked to perfection and 1,000 topping suggestions – no fries though.(3) Le Parker Meridian – secret hotel burger – lines and not a great value (thin burger).(4) Burger place in Madison Sq Park – lines are ridiculous – thin but flavorful pattyI haven’t tried Paul’s in East Village but it’s next on my list.Pros + Good but not great burgerCons – Mild seasoning (salt), lack of consistency, cheap buns, smelly place
